Affidavits are documents that people prepare and sign. They are like written testimony. The purpose of the document is twofold: (1) a person gives their written narrative that is pertinent to the legal matter and (2) that person swears on oath or affirmation that the narrative is true and accurate under penalty of perjury. They are used in a number of legal proceedings and even in other contexts. For example, a person who loses an important legal document might prepare an affidavit and explain how they lost it before they are allowed to replace it. If you are being asked to sign an affidavit and you are not sure whether you should, contact an attorney or our office to obtain legal advice.
