Many people think of owning land as the end-all, be-all of property ownership.  But it is not.  Easements are a particular method of owning an interest in land.  A very common type of easement is one own by your local city so they can enter your property to maintain utilities.  Sometimes, a person will own a "right of way" over someone else's land so they can access their land.  Many easements relate to one parcel adjacent to another; some easements deal with just one plot of land.
