A "privilege" in a legal sense is owned by a party during the course of legal representation that entitles them to refrain from providing certain information to the rest of the world. Most people have heard of attorney-client privilege. That is the idea that the private communications between a client and their attorney are protected from disclosure. There are other types of privileges too. Each state and the federal government recognizes many of the same, but sometimes differing privilege. Nebraska has enacted a statute that enshrines the privileges the courts must protect including such privileges like:
Doctor-patient privilege
Communications to clergy privilege
Husband-wife privilege
These and many more privileges come with their own exceptions, nuances, and applications. If you believe you're being asked to disclose communications that are privileged, you should contact an attorney immediately. Feel free to contact our office if you would like to navigate any such questions.
