When it comes to a civil, legal injury there are primarily two kinds: a contract injury and a tort injury. A contract injury is what you might think: a person has breached or poorly performed. On the other hand, we all have rights that we may not have contracts for but people still injure. For example, trespassing or slander. Neither of which are contract rights, but they are injuries to your personal rights.
That is what a tort is. It is an injury to your personal rights that are not subject to a contract. A person commits an "intentional tort," when they do an act or fail to do an act (on purpose) that they know will cause you harm, such as slander. An unintentional tort is where a party does an act or fails to act (on accident) but they still should have known better. An example of that might be dumping chemicals on their own property, but it causes damage to your soil. They may not have meant to injure your property, but it was negligent nevertheless!
